Zines

"Zine" is short for "magazine", only it could also be published electronically ("e-zine"). This section contains links to e-zines on the web as well as some information on relevant paper publications.

On The Web

  • "OM" (Russian - koi8, win)
The "print" version of this magazine was nominated as "the best magazine of 1996" in Russia. The old "music-fashion-sex" formula seems to have worked well. Their web site is a very entertaining and visually appealing one.

  • "Ptuch" (Russian : koi-8)
Recently redesigned on-line version of the well-known magazine balancing in topics between contemporary music (ambient,IDM,jungle, trip-hop, etc) and latest fashion styles. Music prevails.

  • " The St.Petersburg Times" (English)
Weekly e-zine. The "All about town" section has club listings, concert reviews and more. I would say it's the best local publication in English.

  • "Beat ?" (Russian: koi-8, win)
Self-description : "Russian-language magazine covering today's alternative scene" . The first (experimental) issue seems to be the last one. Only visit if you are interested in two-year old news.

  • "Zabriski Rider" (Russian : koi-8,win,mac,lat)
Serious magazine discussing cultural aspects of Western civilization, so to speak. Published in both electronic and paper formats. Editorial staff seems to have been transported from the Woodstock concert : much of the magazine's materials are about the hippie movement. Very decent looks and thought-out design. Comes in all flavours of Russian (WIN, KOI, MAC, ISO, LAT).

Off The Web

  • Rock Fuzz - St.Petersburg
Recently revitalized newspaper covering rock-n-roll in St.Petersburg and beyond. Printed monthly. About 24 pages.
